The White House said on Monday it was continuing to do all that it can to secure the release of three Americans detained in North Korea, after they made a televised appeal for help from the U.S. The three spoke to the cable channel CNN on Monday, with one of the prisoners saying his health was failing and another describing his situation as “urgent.” “We have seen the reports of interviews with the three American citizens detained in North Korea,” Patrick Ventrell, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government on Monday requested that the North Korean government release three U.S. citizens currently detained there "out of humanitarian concern" and grant one of them special amnesty to seek medical care. Three U.S. citizens - Kenneth Bae, Jeffrey Fowle and Matthew Miller - asked the American government for help returning home on Monday in rare interviews with CNN set up by the North Korean government. Bae is serving a 15-year sentence, others are awaiting trial. "There is no greater priority for us than the welfare and safety of U.S. citizens abroad ... ...

Monaco's Colombian striker Radamel Falcao eyes the ball during a French L1 football match against Evian TG (EVTG) at the Louis II Stadium in Monaco on November 8, 2013Manchester United have agreed a sensational deal to sign Colombia striker Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from Monaco, according to widespread British media reports on Monday. The prolific 28-year-old forward, who missed the World Cup with a serious knee injury, was whisked into United's Carrington training centre on Monday evening after flying into Manchester, Sky Sports News reported. Should he pass a medical examination and agree personal terms before the 2200 GMT transfer deadline, he will join United on loan for a reported fee of around 10 million euros ($13.1 million). United will then have an option to make the deal permanent for 55 million euros at the end of the season, sources at Monaco told AFP.

This undated handout photo recieved from FreeKenNow.com on October 12, 2013 shows US citizen Kenneth Bae, a 44-year-old US citizen jailed in North Korea who is also known by his Korean name Pae Jun-HoThree US citizens held in North Korea pleaded for their freedom Monday, urging Washington to send an envoy to the isolated authoritarian state to negotiate their release. As government minders looked on, Kenneth Bae, Jeffrey Fowle and Matthew Miller, who appeared tense, provided new details about their treatment in the reclusive, autocratic state. "Continue to pray for me," Bae, the longest-held detainee, said in a message to family and friends in a highly unusual interview with CNN. Bae was arrested in November 2012 and later sentenced to 15 years of hard labor on charges of seeking to topple the North Korean government.

European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinely talks to the media during a press conference on August 6, 2014 in Louisville, KentuckyRyder Cup captains Paul McGinley and Tom Watson take centre stage on Tuesday when they both name their three wildcard picks to complete their lineups for Gleneagles. McGinley in particular is facing a tough choice with two former world number ones, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald, along with the Ryder Cup hero of two years ago Ian Poulter all failing to make it into the nine automatic qualifying slots. Normally they would all be clearcut picks for the Irishman, but complicating the situation is the good form of Scotland's Stephen Gallacher, who narrowly missed out on supplanting Graeme McDowell in the ninth and final qualifying spot by finishing third on Sunday at the Italian Open. McGinley, who played and missed the cut in Turin, was on hand to see how hard Gallacher battled to make the team and he was full of praise for the 39-year-old who lives just 35 miles from Gleneagles and knows the course better than anyone else among the Ryder Cup hopefuls.

The Astros have fired manager Bo Porter in his second season with the club. General manager Jeff Luhnow says the decision wasn't based on Houston's record but because "we need a new direction in our clubhouse." The Astros entered Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, in fourth place in the AL West with a 59-79 record, second worst in the league. (AP Photo/Nam Y. Huh, File)HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros fired manager Bo Porter on Monday, saying the dismissal had less to do with the team's 59-79 record than the need for "new direction" and a "united message throughout the entire organization."
